"The crawler-transporter is a tracked vehicle used to transport the space shuttle since the assembly building at NASA until Launch Complex 39. They were originally used to transport the Saturn rockets 4 and 5 during the Apollo program, Skylab and Apollo Soyuz. Currently they are in service to transport spacecraft. The carrier track-door mobile launching platforms and after each launch comes in the base assembly.

We're not sure if we can talk about or speculate on the relationship between the tracked vehicles and architecture or urban planning, but why not?. Just a few days ago we published a post on the space city of Yona Friedman or it suggests moving structures and temporary place of rigid and inflexible structural principles of traditional architecture. This leads us to talk about experimentation with the structures and space technology. Could we get other types of cities?

According to Friedman, the city development is unpredictable, which does not allow planners to design a city to its own inhabitants. In its manifesto, the Mobile Architecture , some 10 points to outline a new architecture that the new urban society is not decided only by city planners but also by the structures, reflecting the advances of modern technology. This does look like there not to images of caterpillars?
In paragraph 9 of his manifesto, Friedman wrote: the structure that forms the city should be a skeleton that would be occupied at will. The additions to the skeleton correspond to the wishes of any population.

Let us leave us closer Friedman and ideas of Archigram where everything, absolutely everything, suddenly becomes architecture. Knowing that the larvae would probably no problem compete with the structures of Archigram. Can we see the caterpillars as a walking city? Even when Peter Blake speaks of impressions Walking City sees structures for takeoff at Cape Kennedy, in fact, he sees the building of Archigram, who have become reality. The design created by engineers at NASA is actually very close to the axioms of the philosophy of English: mobility, flexibility, impermanence.
But also in agreement with the ideas of Ron Herron (member of Archigram) proposed in 1964 to Walking City. In an article published pioneering Archigram, Ron offers buildings with massive mobile robot structures, with their own intelligence, who can freely wander the world, where moving resources and manpower are available. Walking several cities may also interconnect with each other to form a Walking Metropool when the need arises, and then disperse when the concentration of power is no longer necessary.

The influence of these avant-garde has survived beyond the last 50 years, until now, both in the imaginary space that stimulates these structures or work such as Crawler Town of Dave DeGobbi. "
